SoftWindows™ 1.0.1 for Power Macintosh - Read Me First
SoftWindows allows your Power Macintosh to run MS-DOS and Windows applications, at speeds similar to 486sx PCs.
To run SoftWindows:
• Double-click "SoftWindows Demo.sea" to install the software onto your Macintosh hard disk.
It will create a folder called "SoftWindows Demo" on the drive you select. The folder requires 33MB of available disk space. When the installation is finished, click OK in the dialog box that informs you that 'Installation was successful.'
Note: If you have an 8MB Power Macintosh, you'll need to turn on Virtual Memory in the Memory control panel and Restart before running SoftWindows. Performance will be much less than it would be with 16MB or more of RAM, without Virtual Memory.
• Open the SoftWindows Demo folder. Drop the icon called "Drop me onto SoftWindows" onto one of the two SoftWindows application icons: drop it on "SoftWindows for 8Mb" if you have 8Mb memory installed in your Power Macintosh, or drop it on "SoftWindows for 16Mb" if you have 16Mb or more in your Power Macintosh. SoftWindows will start up, and in a moment you'll see MS-DOS running in the SoftWindows window.
• To start up Windows, type WIN and press the return key.
What to do next:
If you have Windows or DOS software, install it following the instructions for installing the software on a PC. You can sample Windows software right away by opening the Games folder and double-clicking Solitaire or Mine Sweep, or by opening the Accessories folder and double-clicking Write, Paint, Calculator, Cardfile, Calendar or Clock.
Limitations:
This version of SoftWindows 1.0.1 has had a number of features disabled: you will not be able to create a new SoftPC hard disk file, nor will you be able to assign a Macintosh folder as a drive for SoftWindows. In the fully-functional product, you can create a new hard disk file to make a larger C drive, and use Macintosh folders and drives as PC drives to hold files. Both Macintosh and PC software will be able to access files stored in Mac folders.
In addition, this version will only run for 20 minutes per launch, and you are allowed a total of 10 launches. The software will expire 30 days after the first time you run SoftWindows.
